You only get one chance at a first impression.

I have lived in the neighborhood of West Kelowna Estates since 2013 with my wife and 2 children. I have a B.A. (Sociology) from the U of Saskatchewan, a broadcasting diploma from Mount Royal College in Calgary, and too many AV industry-related certifications to list. I’ve run my own business as a commercial audio-visual integrator since 2020. I play hockey in winter and golf in spring/summer/fall. I also moonlight as a bass player in the band Madhouse Tactics.
As my children grew up I helped where I could; I coached soccer and baseball, chaperoned many school field trips, DJ'ed at the RVE spring carnival for 10 years straight, and was involved with the Parent Advisory Council at both Rose Valley Elementary and MBSS. I didn't do these things to fill up a resume - I did them to be involved in my children’s lives but also because I had to step up when no one else would.
Some of you may already know me. And for those of you that don't here are a few pics of me in action

Another successful video conferencing upgrade.
No virtual background for this guy

The world is a fun place

Surprise

I drive a lot.
I worked on the new City Hall in 2023 and the project was run so poorly (ask me about it) I pledged (multiple times) to run for City Council - so here I am.
Most of us have similar critiques of actions by City Hall - if you live and work here you know.
I don’t drink water out of the tap. I don’t plan anything involving electricity on Saturdays because the power might go out. 2 of the 3 roads I take down the hill from my house have unfinished roadwork (if you live on Horizon you especially know what I mean).
Rather than wait for someone else to fix these issues I want to be part of the solution.
An obvious challenge - if you know anyone who is in favour of reckless spending without any accountability let me know.
Council needs to pay more attention to the budget line items - not just initial capital investment but also future operating costs. Austerity is not the same as fiscal responsibility.
Do we have enough water now and will we have enough in the future? This includes residential and industrial. Does the city have a plan/strategy? Restrictions should be the exception not the rule. I'm not sure who made the decision to make the water source for our expensive new Water Treatment Plant the reservoir - but in hindsight (and foresight) that seems like the wrong move. I like high levels of manganese in my tap water as much as the next person but we need accountability on that one.
West Kelowna is a great place to live...but that doesn't mean everyone who wants to move here can. If the province dictates that we need to build 2000 houses then they need to upgrade the associated services - better roads/transit, a hospital, etc. to match the increase in population. Taxpayer dollars shouldn't pay for street parking for apartments without enough spots or utility upgrades for developers.
A complex issue for a variety of reasons. You can't legislate people to make good decisions.
It's possible to be compassionate but also have enforceable rules/regulations. Letting people do whatever they want isn't helping them. The city has spent a lot of money on support systems and we need to hear more stories about measurable success. If it isn't working then find out why not and change the strategy. I am curious to hear what perspectives my fellow citizens have on this one.
West Kelowna is a car-centric city. Combined with a lack of viable transit options and tourists/retired people who are driving at all times of the day traffic can get frustrating. This doesn't even account for the bridge mayhem that can occur at any given time. All types of transportation should be evaluated and considered but also considered with regards to development. Light Rail, e-whatever (cars/bikes/scooters), incentives for carpooling, etc.
The first thing most people say to me when they find out I'm running is "where are the signs?". Great question.
The second thing I hear is "that's awesome - you would be perfect" (thanks!)
My plan is to run without the use of election signs.
They cost money. They clutter up the landscape. They are prone to theft and vandalism. They are an antiquated communication mechanism from a time before the internet.
If a citizen votes for a candidate based on the amount of signs they put out versus what they actually bring to the table as a person then we deserve the city we get..
I have lived, worked, and raised children in this wonderful community and I've met and interacted with many people; clients, neighbors, fellow parents, teachers, and teammates. I put my name on the ballot with the support of many of these people - and I hope they would let others know. I want to represent council because of my skills and leadership - not because I spent the most money.
